Round 30 Concert -
The Gov.- Sunday November 27, 2011
by Barry Baddams for Weekend Warriors
After a couple of dodgy days weatherwise, it was a beautiful afternoon and altogether too nice to be inside. That is, unless you were at The Gov for the Weekend Warriors Round 30 Concert on this very appropriately-named Sunday. A prominent sign declared “No crowd surfing”, not usually an issue at these concerts for fear of pulled muscles and back strains. However, this concert saw the debut of a Warriors initiative –the Young Warriors- where anyone under 21 can strut their stuff onstage along with the “old” Warriors. This brings a new audience to the concerts, where you don’t usually get lots of mums and dads videoing the performances and also introduces a new phenomenon to Warriors concerts as youthful fingers indulge in a frenzy of tweeting and texting while simultaneously talking, eating and drinking.
The Dom and Tom show kicked things off, with Dom giving a quick rundown of the program’s background before Tom came out to warm up the building crowd. Tom wasn’t leaving until he was satisfied that we were ready to rock, ladies and gentlemen!- and we were! So without further ado, the first ever Young Warrior band in the history of the program –Frogstomp - took the stage. Fronted by Mikaela on vocals, the four-piece unit started with Wombats’ Tokyo and got our attention very nicely thank you. The other Micaela in the band,( who was just slightly larger than her bass) and Jordan on drums gave Mikaela a solid foundation for her vocals. Hamish displayed some fancy fingerwork on Electric Feel and their final song Animal gave everybody a chance to rock, with the false ending fooling everybody except me (I wish!). Frogstomp were really warmed up now but as the youngsters only get three songs, that was it for them. A great set to open the concert and fantastic to see young talent getting this sort of experience and exposure.
The next band The Rock Poppets deserved a Grammy for just being there (do they have Grab –a-Grammy nights at The Gov?). Apparently, three of their number pulled out on the day ! That’s like being stood up on your wedding day. However, one of the great strengths of the Weekend Warriors is that there are always others who have been through the program and are willing to step up to the plate in moments like these. Consequently, the Poppets were able to perform with stalwart Tony subbing on guitar, Trap on the drums and Rita on vocals (whose name I almost missed in the confusion at the end when the band members were being introduced, probably to each other!) Under the circumstances, they turned on a great performance. Jenny’s vocals were top-notch and she worked really well with Rita at the other mike. I especially liked their Pleasure and Pain, which was probably how they were feeling just before the gig. Neville on bass had chosen his Green Troll look for the day and was working beautifully with the unflappable Trap. Tony seemed to be enjoying the opportunity to throw in some high-voltage chops along with Ross, who wowed us with a blistering lead in Lennon & McCartney’s I Saw Her Standing There. By the time they got to their finale and Kissed us off with the anthemic I Was Made For Loving You Baby, they were cookin’! Despite losing half their original team, the Rock Poppets rocked the house!
Fittingly for a Sunday, Bridge Over Heaven came on stage. Young Warrior Mikaela, who had already warmed up with Frogstomp, was also fronting this band and she hit the ground running with the AccaDacca classic Highway To Hell, with Hector on lead punching out the satanic riff. Frogstomp’s drummer Jordan filled in on bass, laying down some very tight lines with Silvia on drums. They then launched into a great version of Smashing Pumpkins’ 1979 and presumably due to the highway to Hell being closed on Sundays, they tried Knockin On Heaven’s Door, Guns n Roses style. Great stuff! Applause applause!
Next up were Black Roses, a six-piece Warrior band with two singers, Shane and Heather. Heather started with It Hurts So Bad and absolutely nailed it with her great rock voice. She and Shane shared the vocals as the band powered through classics such as Mony Mony and a smokin’ version of The Commitments’ Chain of Fools before closing off their set with Somebody Bring Me Some Water. A very accomplished band, with Bren and Phil trading some solid guitar licks and Brian, dressed in black and eminently grey-haired, looking like a bass-playing pint of Guinness, combining with an impeccable Dave on drums to make people in earthquake-prone areas a little nervous. Funky and tight as, guys!
Sikk Azzz were the youngest band on the bill (apart from Pas on bass who increased their average age a tad) and they immediately received a big occupational health and safety tick by wearing earplugs. The guitar-slingers Nathan and Tyler were dwarfed by the amps but their sound was by no means diminished and the need for earplugs was soon evident. Cara on vocals just stood and delivered in their opener, Avril Lavigne’s Sk8ter Boi. Forget the cute-factor: M.C. Tom must have loved these kids because they came absolutely ready to ROCK, ladies and gentlemen! Their Get Back, driven by “guest child” bassist Pas and the charismatic drummer Dylan, featured great lead work from Tyler and segued seamlessly into Pink’s So What, with Cara starring on vocals and Nathan showing the value of having a great rhythm guitarist in a rock band. Everybody loved this band. There were…totally Sikk Azzz.
The next Warrior band, The Common Good ,had a hard act to follow. They opened with Dave on drums doing a great version of Get It On and followed with Shakin’ All Over a la Quatro. By now it was obvious that these guys knew their way around a rock song, especially when Paul cranked it up on lead guitar. This band resonated a little with me as I filled in for a Warrior band some years back with Pat as vocalist and here she was knockin’ ‘em dead with The Common Good. Her version of the Divinyls Boys In Town was a standout. They also did Tainted Love, which my first ever Warriors band did back in 20-whatever- a rockier version than my humble debut and better for it. Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl doesn’t get played much around the traps so hats off to T.C.G. for including it in their set and really nailing it- the Godfather of Grunge would approve, I’m sure. The Cult’s Wild Flower was the closer, completing a solid and brilliantly presented set. A special mention for Neil on bass who shared lead vocals with Pat - great singing from the lanky bassman. Altogether, an uncommonly good performance from this band.
While Robert Plant is contenting himself recording with bluegrass singers, he can rest assured that singer/guitarists like Marcus in Iron Fist are keeping Led Zepp’s songs alive with his amazing version of Rock & Roll. With Aidan’s pulsing bass, Damon’s drumming thundering like a freight train and Jack ‘s axe threatening to self-ignite, Iron Fist landed a killer punch with their first song and then gave us the old one-two by launching into The Kinks’ You Really Got Me. These guys knew what we wanted to hear! Whatever You Want is one of the more interesting Status Quo songs to play and the great rhythm section, coupled with Jack’s fabulous fretwork, gave Marcus a licence to rock on this one. Great vocals-great band! The Young Warriors program has certainly turned up some winners today.
The final act of the Round 30 concert was another Young Warrior band, Lethal Virus, who ambitiously opened with Metallica’s Master of Puppets and impressively nailed it with Louis on bass and vocals and Brad and Emmanuel setting up the guitar crossfire that makes this one of Metallica’s most memorable creations. As the last on the bill, this band faced a somewhat depleted crowd but to their credit, they gave it everything. Emanuel switched to acoustic for their second offering, Avenge Seven Fold’s So Far Away and you just knew that they were comfortable onstage when Brad casually rested a foot on the foldback. To close their set, and the concert, Lethal Virus gave us Black Book, the only original song for the day which highlighted that they can play and write equally well. Let’s not forget an important part of any rock band-the drummer. Joseph was probably overlooked in the guitar-fest unfolding in front of him but he showed great technique and awareness in his drumming to lay the foundation for a very talented unit. As with many of the bands heard today, I’m sure we’ll hear more of them. Love your work, Lethals!
Rock and roll on, Round 31 in 2012.
Round 28 Concert – Governor Hindmarsh Hotel, Sun. May 1st, 2011
Reviewed by Barry Baddams for Weekend Warriors SA.
Just when we thought that nothing could top the Royal nuptials, along came SA Weekend Warriors’ Round 28 Concert to remind us that commoners have more fun, especially when it involves getting down and dirty, surrounded by Marshall amps, five foldbacks, multiple mikes, racks of guitars and a few hundred friends, family and total strangers who just want to hear good, loud rock and roll.
Greeting me at the door were two of the Warriors SA stalwarts, Pete and Kerry, who had also greeted me at the door to Fowler’s Live as a nervous wreck when I went through Round 9. How long ago was that, and how many thousands have they ushered into these concerts over the years? I just wish that they’d switch roles though and let Pete do the holding while Kerry does the frisking!
Once inside, I was introduced to John Swan (‘Swanee’) who embraced me warmly despite never having met me. Perhaps he was trying to make up for the heavies who wouldn’t let me into a Party Boys after-party way back whenever? Swanee is a Warriors Ambassador and was there to be guest MC for the day – but would he be able to resist giving us a tune?
At 1:58 p.m. the anticipation was palpable. The crowd had grown considerably; lots of Warriors camaraderie on display, with a fair representation of younger people. The bands had been given the running order and the adrenalin was surging, particularly for those who’d just heard that they’d be the opening act. At 2:05 precisely the tireless Dom Disisto, Weekend Warriors’ national coordinator, welcomed us all and introduced Swanee as the guest MC who in turn introduced the first band – Journeymen.
Singer David Weight launched into the Dion/Status Quo chest-beater ‘The Wanderer ‘and the journey had begun, with Tony Heffernan’s guitar and vocals gaining extra cred from his Slash-like top hat and shades –or had he just flown in from the reception at Buck. Palace? These guys rocked their way through a tight set of rock classics and Trevor Philby seemed to enjoy the challenge of playing bass lines and lead runs on what appeared to be a Fender Jazzmaster. For a second, I thought they had re-discovered one of the ‘lost chords’ of rock when what sounded like the G11Sus4 opening to ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ resounded around The Gov but it was only a dropped acoustic guitar- those teasers! The hits kept coming – Thorpie’s ‘Poison Ivy’, a bit of Willburys, some CCR. David’s vocals and the band’s playing on ‘Losing My Religion’ were spot on but for me, they really hit their straps on ‘Paranoid’ with Brandon Roberts nailing some nice lead and the audience being absolutely mugged by that famous Sabbath riff. Through all of this, Graeme Vickerman was rock-steady at the back, laying it down with deftness and power. His freight train rhythm on ‘Get Back’ was relentless and he was a great bedrock for the band. The Journeymen were certainly worth the journey and they set the mood for a great afternoon.
You say you want a resolution? Well, next we got Resolution, a 5 piece band that delivered a hard-rocking guitar- driven set that should have set off the smoke alarms. Stephen Elliott fronted this powerhouse quintet, delivering crowd-pleasers like ‘Addicted to Love’, ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet’ and ‘Saturday Night’s Alright’. Steve Rees and Andy Edwards absolutely cooked on bass and drums, with Steve producing bass lines thick enough to land a whale while Pete Tomaras (on leave from the door) and Ian Drewe just saddled up and headed for distortion city. Resolution power-chorded through The Kinks’ ‘You Really Got Me’ , with Stephen and the band really psyched and synced for this one. And who cares whether it was Jimmy Page or Dave Davies who soloed on the original? Today it was Pete’s turn and he turned in a beauty after earlier teasing us with a blistering but all too brief solo on ‘Addicted To Love’. The boys went out on a high with a great rendition of Steppenwolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’ -and indeed they were! A great set.
The Warrior Voice choir is a relatively new addition to the Warriors SA stable and although missing some members on the day, they provided an oasis of bravura and harmony in the midst of the rock sets, accompanied by backing tracks. Consisting of four gorgeous blonde ladies- Alison,Cheryl,Wendy and Dawn, and three ‘non-blondes’ –Steve,Dave and Rob, Warrior Voice began with Blood,Sweat & Tears’ Spinning Wheel, a great warm-up for what was to follow. Vocal director Jennifer Degrassi has obviously matched her group’s voices very well and this was evident as they soared with the Hair showstopper Aquarius which concluded in a very accomplished a capella fashion. The lads then took the lead in America’s Sister Goldenhair, the girls backing them superbly with pristine, confident and precise harmonies. Their finale was the Joe Cocker /Leon Russell arrangement of A Little Help from My Friends and it was worth waiting for. With Steve taking the lead vocal and the ensemble, including director Jennifer, backing him to the hilt, the anticipation was mounting as the song built to that climactic note. I had once seen Joe Cocker stay upright for long enough at Apollo Stadium to bring the house down with this song and Steve did the business today. When he agonised over needing somebody to love, his primal scream raised hairs and brought appreciative applause from the Gov crowd. In fact, I’m sure that his hat lifted 10cms from his head when he hit that note. Throughout this tour-de-force, Warrior Voice sang with power and passion, providing Steve with a solid backing for his solo work. A fabulous finale to their brief set in which they more than held their own in the boisterous company of the rock bands with whom they shared the day. Kudos to Jennifer and Warrior Voice – may we hear much more from you.
Listening to the guest band Repeat Offenders do their short set after the melodious sounds of the choristers was a bit like following a glass of delicate champagne with a pint of Jim Beam as a chaser. I’m sure that this 4 piece powerhouse is partly responsible for global warming. They have played together for a while and this assuredness and confidence was evident from the start as they slipped into a groove with the Easybeats’ ‘Good Times’ and followed this with a great version of ‘White Wedding’, obviously paying homage to William and Kate, who unfortunately were unable to attend. As a bass player, I know I’m alive when I can feel the bass entering through my feet and working its way up to my head; Rob Hutchings and Garry Dalton were absolutely seismic at the bottom- end, giving guitar-slingers Richard Stillert and Michael Grundy a great platform from which to achieve ignition and lift-off. As if that wasn’t enough, the cuatros hombres then took us to blues-boogie heaven with not one, not two but three ZZ Top classics; Sharp Dressed Man, Tush and Le Grange. If I narrowed my eyes a little, I could see big beards and revolving guitars and if I narrowed them a little more I could see….. what - Jimmy Barnes??? No- it’s our guest MC John Swan, unable to resist the lure of a Billy Gibbon riff, onstage and sharing throat-shredding vocals with Richard in Tush. Great stuff! Dare I say - an arresting performance from Repeat Offenders.
Swanee recovered sufficiently from his brief guest appearance with the Offenders to be able to introduce the next band, a six-piece called Semantics, which thankfully had resisted the temptation to spell its name with an ‘x’. Vocalist Karen O’Keefe attempted to fool us by launching into a Doris Day version of Blue Moon, which then segued into the familiar heavy drum, bass and organ intro to the Spencer Davis Group’s Gimme Some Lovin. Karen took the lead on this with co-vocalist Julian Smith joining in and Martin Coan adding saxophone, which we don’t often hear at Warrior gigs. I loved their Mustang Sally, with the sax really punching through, Julian’s vocals really doing the business and Harvey Marcus and Brian Stebbing’s rhythm factory working overtime. Another earth-moving moment, courtesy of Brian, proving once again that bass players do it deeper! Troy Pope, the band’s only guitarist, held his own against Martin’s sax and Karen’s keyboard, playing an SG and switching to what looked like a Les Paul to peel off some nice Honky Tonk Women licks. Semantics’ singers Karen and Julian were charismatic, worked the audience nicely and sang well together or solo, with Julian literally throwing himself into several songs. Their Because The Night was a highlight and they finished their set brilliantly with Bryan Ferry’s Let’s Stick Together, featuring great vocals and sax and that rock-solid rhythm-section. Troy, obviously inspired by his SG, had an Angus Young moment and climbed onto the speaker stack for the finale. He didn’t quite attempt the forward somersault from there, made famous on the same stage by the mandolin player from The Thieves a few years ago but it was a radical rock and roll experience, which sums up pretty well what Semantics had given us for 30 minutes.
The Round 28 Concert’s final band was Hot Chill , a 5 piece unit fronted by Melissa Evans, whose turbocharged voice was able to do justice to powerhouse songs by artist such as Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. They started off with an Oz-Rock classic, the Divinyls’ Boys in Town and then totally nailed The Commitments’ Take Me to the River, setting up an irresistible groove that enticed some dancers onto the floor. They followed up with the old one-two punch by launching into the disco favourite, Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive, which got a few more up dancing – you can never find a mirror-ball when you need one! By now, Melissa was in the zone, channelling Janis Joplin for about four and a half minutes when she lived and breathed Move Over, while the band stuck with her all the way- a great performance that I’m sure would have won Pearl’s approval. This band was tight-as; Trap’s slick drumming and Vic Perry’s bass setting the pace, while guitarists Mark Jordon and Peter Matthews were working beautifully to manufacture the classic riffs for the band’s finale of Aretha’s Respect and the anthemic River Deep, Mountain High which Melissa and the guys brought home on all eight cylinders. Hot stuff from Hot Chill!
And then it was over-but was it?
The great thing about the Warriors rounds is that as the last notes subside, musical relationships are being forged and many of the groups stay together or form new bands which play at gigs all over the state. Unlike the star attractions of the “Walking with Dinosaurs” show across the road at the Entertainment Centre, this music will never become extinct as long as there are organisations like Warriors SA, along with sponsors Holden Hill Music, AIMMS School of Rock & The Governor Hindmarsh, to encourage us to dust off our instruments, scrape the rust off the voice, put on the gear and just let it rock. Roll on Round 29!

This Band included one of our talented sponsors, Rock Music’s Rob Puddy. With all the songs being original makes them the first original band ever to become Weekend Warriors. They all should be congratulated on the result a great well put together show, the band played together very professionally. This band rocked and they had a ball doing it, I’m sure this is not the last we will see of this band.
The next act was our Special segment of Band In a Box, designed to show the crowd how we place perfect strangers together to perform songs, some of which they have never played before & in a Band? They all were so committed to playing together as a band and it showed, as it was hard to tell the difference between them & the bands that had rehearsed. Well done to all three jam bands. To think that some of them would have never played together if not for this program, tells me we must be doing something right, Rock On! Another huge night and fantastic success. All involved were
proud to be part of another successful Weekend Warrior concert
on Saturday night at Fowlers Live on the 2nd of December.
Four new bands + two teen warrior bands performed while the
audience danced & cheered - and what about that crowd? Thanks
to all your family & friends for supporting another great
show. Each and every family or friend that came deserves a
big pat on the back. Just shows music is a great way to bring
people together and for a great cause. Also a big thankyou
to our special guest speaker Jeanette Milford for getting
up and saying a few words about where some of the money goes,
in this case Music Therapy. Tom Leech, what a great job he
did pumping up that crowd thanks again Tom for your time.
Opening up the evening was AS IF, with songs like Holy Grail
they had the crowd rocking right from the start. Other tunes
included Norwegian Wood, Time after Time & many more, these
guys rocked. Great job to all involved, which included Marissa
on Vocals, Rod on Drums & Vocals, Karen on keys and vocals,
all had a ball up there grooving to the beat. Other members
included David on Guitars & Vocals and pulling out some great
licks. Berin on Bass who just did a magnificent job & held
the beat all the way. Hard to believe they only rehearsed
for 4 weeks, so a big THANKYOU from all of us & well done
to all. We know how hard it is to open a show but you all
performed like true professionals.
The next band, KAOS, well again this band really pulled out
some magic & had the crowd eating out of their hands with
fans going wild. On the night they sounded as if they had
played together for months and it is so hard to believe they
have only rehearsed together for 4 weeks. Their songs included
Lets get the party started, Hot stuff, You make love & fun
plus many more… Great Job to all, special thanks to Alison
on Vocals, great job out front, you rocked. Other members
included Frazer on Guitar who was in his glory, Mary on Bass
fantastic job in holding it all together, last but definitely
not least Chris on Drums who came in with only TWO REHEARSALS,
what more can I say but WELL DONE TO ALL in this band, I was
impressed. Especially with the fill in guitar player with
a bit more practice who knows what he might become?
The next act was SAYONARA SUNSHINE; all were from our Teen
Warrior program. They all were so committed to playing together
as a band and it showed. To think that some of them would
have never played together if not for this program, tells
me we must be doing something right, Rock On! Anyhow back
to the band, rocking with hits such as Artist in the ambulance
- they had the crowd begging for more - and the audience received
much more. The whole band grooved, well done and a big thanks
to all involved.
The next teen band was called THE LAST DEED, again all teen
warriors and what a job. They kicked butt with songs such
as Hells song; First Date & She hates me. Remember these teen
bands only had 5 weeks preparation and have never played together
as a band before! I think it is a magnificent effort and hats
off to Tony their coach well done mate.
Ok back to the older generation (LOL) THE MOSS ROCKS. Well
what can I say about these guys. They ROCKED! The crowd went

They all should be congratulated on the end result a great
well put together set. Introducing the members David on Drums
who has improved ten fold since I saw him at the jam, supported
by the very talented Dave on Bass (Great Job) held the band
together very professionally & might I say his second time
through, Lisel on Vocals, this chick rocks and had a ball
doing it, again great job as I still get surprised when I
see how all of you shine in only just 4 weeks, also on Vocals
Joff who again was another big part of this band's achievements
on the night. On guitars pulling out some great licks on the
night - rock on - Lawrie & Dave, well done another great job.
Again thanks to all of you for making it a great night to
remember and to think all these people have only played together
for 4 weeks. GO Warriors!

When the next band, RAGGED EDGE, rolled onto the stage we
knew we were ready for a huge night. Performing with Julie
on Vocals such hits as River Deep Mountain High and Rockin
All Over The World the crowd just wanted more. Fans were reported
to have broken through security but were eventually cut off
before jumping on stage. This band was smokin'. Well done
to all the other members Matt on Drums, Rob on Guitar, Chris
on Keys and Mr Bass man John! Fantastic Job well done.
THE WRINKLES well what can I say about these guys. They ROCKED!
and the costumes were fantastic! They win best-dressed category
for the night hands down what a theme, the crowd went wild
as they blasted out their set. Val & Mary had the crowd eating
out of their hands with hits like Bye Bye Love, House of the
Rising Sun and their version of Eagle Rock which brought the
house DOWN! I thought their voices blended so well together
and they should be congratulated on the end result. They were
supported by the very talented band of Chris & David on Guitars,
Rockin Ron on Drums & Vocals (Rumours are he will be touring
next year), Graham on Bass, (Finally has joined the Warriors
as he missed last round due to no spaces being available)
Janice on Keys, who did a great job and to think at the Jam
was having second thoughts, not now I hope. GO Wrinkles!
The next act was LOST CHORDS, these guys have stayed together
from Round 1 and were invited back as special guests. Charlie
who spoke before the band came on is now the President of
the newly formed Warriors Association. This shows us how committed
these guys are to Recreational Music in their lives. It's
what it is all about and we have been supported not only by
past and present but by Media in the form of Channel 7 giving
it great coverage and ensuring that there will be plenty more
to come, Rock On! Anyhow back to the band, Rockin' with hits
such as I Saw her Standing there & All Fired Up. Well - they
had the crowd begging for more...and the audience got many
more great songs. The whole band pumped with Natasha on Vocals,
Howard on Drums, Dave on guitar & vocals, Lindsay on guitar
& vocals, Tom on guitar & vocals and his wife our rock legend
bass chick (El Presidente) Charlie.
Following this was the band MORNING GLORY well again the
crowd just cheered and chanted and these guys ROCKED HARD
with hits like Cheap Wine, Be Bop A Lu La & Only Wanna Be
with You. With rock chick Tonia on vocals, Drum lord John
on drums, John on Bass who came in and only had 3 weeks to
get to the show well done he held together a tight rhythm
section, Peter (Townsend) only kidding! blasting out on guitar
with help from multi-instrumentalist Graeme now on Guitar
in this band, last but not least Janice on keys who seems
to be in more than one band also? hey not bad. You guys kicked
serious butt well done!
Last but not least ROCK THE CASBAH, what can I say these
guys had it all, Rock, Blues you name it. They delivered a
well thought out set with an awesome display of vocal ability
from Rick & Rockin Ron (How many bands is this guy in?). Singing
such hits as Born to be Wild plus many more great tunes. The
band was tight and held together with Rhythm section our Man
Bernie on bass (He gets around) Peter on Guitar who also played
in two bands and did an amazing job of Revolution great stuff
Mate YOU ROCKED!, Chris on keys this guy can play and showed
his piano skills with Crocodile Rock among other tunes what
a Pro and also was in two bands ROCK ON! Last but not least
Gerson on Sax, Drums & Percussion very talented young man
all in all this band sounded hot and had the crowd screaming
for encore after encore they just couldn't get enough of em,
we had ladies throwing underwear on stage and fainting in
the audience as fans crushed the security barrier to get close
to their idols. Man you had to be there unbelievable.

Round 1 Adelaide Weekend Warriors huge night - 29 November 2003
(Dom)
All involved were proud to be part of a successful Weekend Warrior concert on Saturday night @ Fowlers Live on the 29 November. Five new bands performed while the audience danced & chanted - and what about that Crowd? Great turnout of family & friends!
Opening up with the great sounds of THE WHO ARE WE. A raunchy band which opened with Kevin singing Rock around the clock and had the crowd going right from the start. Claire joined the stage afterwards and just kept the vibe going with a great list of tunes including a great version of Would I Lie to You. Great job guys. Other members included Jean-Pierre on Harmonica, Adam on guitar, Greg on Drums, Jack on Guitar & our own rock Bass chick Charlie.
When the next band HIP JOINT rolled onto the stage in matching T-shirts, we knew we were ready for a huge night. Performing with Tony on Vocals such hits as Sunny Afternoon and Ruby Tuesday the crowd just wanted more. Two ladies were reported to have broken through security but were eventually cut off before jumping on stage. These guys were smokin'. Well done to the other members Dave, Lou, Peter, Roland and Phil!
8 AM were fronted by Justine on lead vocals. She sang a run of hit songs including "Born to be Wild" and "Lightning Crashes" and just had the crowd pumping. What a great Rock voice. Justine was also joined on Vocals by Kym who also played Bass. This guy has never played in a band - what a start - fantastic. Rumours are he picked up at the gig. This was never in the programme manual, maybe he is writing his own. They were supported by the very talented band of Chris on Guitar (who originally was not sure of doing this programme and is now converted), John on Drums (never had a lesson), Jumpin' Jason on Guitar, Shane with plenty of Power Watts also on guitar. Man they rocked more than they rolled!
The next act was Lost Chords, wearing matching vests they were dressed to Rock. Rockin with hits such as Back in the USSR, Twist & Shout, Knock on Wood. Well, they had the crowd begging for more... and the audience got more and more great songs. The whole band pumped with Natasha on Vocals, Howard on Drums, Dave on guitar & vocals, Lindsay on guitar & vocals, Tom on guitar & vocals and his wife our rock legend bass chick Charlie.
Last but not least SILVER HAIR, what can I say these guys had it all, Rock, Soul you name it. They delivered a well thought out set with an awesome display of vocal ability from Karyn & Don. Singing such hits as Son of a Preacher Man, Can't Always Get What You Want plus many more great tunes. The band was tight and held together with Rhythm section - our Man Dave on bass (he gets around), Phil on Drums who also played in two bands, JP on guitar - Rock on - and Michael on guitar. (I remember having the conversation with him as he felt he would not cut this playing in a band thing) WRONG! You did mate and I would reckon he has been bitten like the rest of 'em.
Well done to the coaches, Reverend Tom & Tony (Stage Roady) if any of you would like to share your story, we would luv to hear from you, Just reply to the email & I will include it in our list of many testimonials.
